    SPECIAL ISSUE OF GLOCALL 2024 CONFERENCE PAPERS
    Perceptions, Perspective, and Assessment of Technology and AI in the Asian Context

    Technological advancements have undeniably transformed the way we live, work, and engage with the world. In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a defining force at the forefront of this transformation, reshaping industries, economies, and even the fabric of human relationships. Public perceptions of technology and AI often embody a mix of fascination, excitement, apprehension, and scepticism. While some view AI as a powerful means to address global challenges, others regard it as a potential threat to employment, privacy, and even humane existence.


    These diverse perspectives make this Special Issue—focusing on the perceptions and perspectives of technology, with a particular emphasis on AI -- both timely and highly relevant. In addition, this issue explores the tools and methodologies used to evaluate its effectiveness, fairness, and impact, and considers how such assessments influence policy-making, development, system design, and future research. To further enrich the discussion, it also includes papers addressing related themes in technology and AI.


    The articles featured in this Special Issue were carefully selected and rigorously peer-reviewed from submissions to the GLoCALL 2024 Conference, jointly organised by PacCALL and Hanoi University of Industry, held from 22 to 24 August 2024. This conference is part of the annual GLoCALL series, established in 2007, to provide a platform for sharing insights, research, and practices on integrating technology into language learning, and for exploring how technology can be adapted to meet diverse learner needs. We are delighted to present an exceptional collection of twenty-nine articles—an unprecedented number that sets a new record for a GLoCALL conference, demonstrating the event’s increasing impact and prominence in this field.


    Finally, the chief editor would like to take this opportunity to thank the co-editors – Dr Warid Mihat, Dr Priyadarshini, Dr Sook Jhee Yoon, and Dr Danyang Zhang – for their collaborative efforts in producing this Special Issue.
