Generative AI in Online English Learning: A Qualitative Case Study of Non-English-Major Students in a Vietnamese Blended-Learning Environment

Abstract

The worldwide adoption of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has created new possibilities for English language learning, yet limited research has examined how non-English-major students engage with GenAI in blended online environments in Vietnam. Grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), this qualitative case study investigates students’ perceptions and actual use of GenAI in learning English at a Vietnamese university. Data were collected through focus group interviews with 30 students, analysis of chat histories from 23 students, and semi-structured interviews with 8 lecturers. The findings indicate generally positive perceptions of GenAI in terms of perceived usefulness, ease of use, and learning engagement, while also revealing challenges related to AI literacy, feedback reliability, and the absence of clear institutional guidelines. Importantly, the results highlight a tension between learning support and overreliance on AI-generated content, suggesting implications for self-regulated learning (SRL) in blended contexts. The outcomes of this study are expected to contribute to a better understanding of how GenAI is integrated into English language learning and offer practical implications for educators and technology developers aiming to enhance AI-supported language education.

  • Ngo Thi Minh Hai, Hanoi University of Industry

    Ms. Ngo Thi Minh Hai, a PhD student in English Language Studies at Hanoi University of Industry, Ha Noi, Vietnam, has more than 10 years of teaching experience as an English teacher. She is responsible for designing and teaching an EOP blended program for both English-majored and non-English-majored students. Her areas of professional interest include AI, learners’ autonomy, and blended learning. She can be reached at haintm@haui.edu.vn.

  • Pham Vu Phi Ho, Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City

    Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Vu Phi Ho, Faculty of Foreign Languages, Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, was previously Vice President of Ba Ria – Vung Tau University and Vice President of Van Hien University, Vietnam. He created and designed ICTE Robots for language learners and IELTS practice. Pham has published more than 80 research articles in both local and International Journals, such as Computer-Assisted Language Learning, SAGE Open, System, and Journal of Psycholinguist Research (25 Scopus/14 ISI), and 10 books and course-books. He is the President of AsiaCALL and Vice President of ICTE. He is now the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of TESOL & Education.

  • Nguyen Thi Huong, Hanoi University of Industry

    Dr. Huong T. Nguyen currently serves as a senior lecturer at the School of Languages and Tourism – Hanoi University of Industry and holds the position of Executive Director of the VietTESOL Association – a trusted platform for teachers of English in Vietnam. She earned her BA, MA, and PhD degrees in ELT and linguistics. Her expertise and interests include teacher training, professional development, curriculum development, and linguistics.
