Abstract

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly influenced various sectors, including education and employment. Literature has reported numerous issues related to AI and its possible impact. The purpose of this study is two-fold: (1) to investigate final-year students' perceptions of the potential impact of AI on job opportunities, and (2) to explore the competencies required for final-year English majors to adapt to AI developments and enhance their employability. Data for this study were collected through an online survey delivered to 115 final-year EFL students and semi-structured interviews with 14 randomly selected students from the surveyed group. The findings revealed that most students possess basic knowledge of AI and apply it in their studies and work; as AI continues to advance, however, they not only recognize its benefits in related areas such as translation, interpretation, and teaching but also express considerable concern about the potential decline in job demand it may cause. The findings, therefore, suggest that students should strengthen their professional and AI-related knowledge and, in particular, develop soft skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving, which are essential for adapting to and competing in the highly fluctuating labor market.
